Verna Quilt Process

Hello friends! My "VERNA" Quilt is coming along. I have had some time to sew on it lately. This quilt is my quilt I designed for my month hosting the quilting bee I am in. A quilting bee is made up of 12 ladies that each take a month of the year to host. When it's you month to host you design a quilt block and mail out fabric packs to the other 11 members. They get your fabric and make you a few blocks for your quilt. Then they mail the completed blocks back to you to sew together. My quilting bee quilt is called Verna. I finally sewed all the blocks together for the front. I then designed and pieced a very unique quilt back. Here are some photo's of this quilt process. Enjoy! I can't wait to quilt this! Hello! It's been a while since my last real update. I have 3 new quilts and some new bibs and stuff to share with you! First I would like to share the "Heart and Hands" Quilt. This quilt was made for my daughters pre-k class for a fundraiser auction for the school. It was such a fun quilt to work on. For more details, the kind of fabric paint I used, and LOTS more PICTURES, click here.

My next update is the LUKE Quilts. There are two quilts! I made a big quilt for a precious baby boy, and my daughter designed the tiny quilt. While I was laying our the back of the big quilt, my 5-year-old daughter played with some scraps and came up with her own design! I was so amazed and proud of her that I stopped what I was doing and stitched up her tiny quilt top. She then picked out a backing flannel and I quilted it. After it was finished, she gave it to the baby with a huge smile. Lots of love went into these two quilts! For more pictures and info click here.

The Quilting Bee Block {part 2}

Please read part 1 first. Part 1 is the real tutorial showing step by step examples. Part 2 is just of you want to be a little more experimental with your block. I will just show a few snapshots and tips to get your own creativity flowing.
The left block was created in part 1. The right block was a lot more "crazy" (can you tell the difference?)

This is a picture with a 5 sided center and 5 strips added. I'm not liking the shape it is taking on. What do I do? Get out the ruler and the rotary blade!

I'm going to chop it off here and add another side. It should of had 5 sides anyway, but that little peach strip I started with got buried in the mix. And that's okay! When you piece a block with out a backing or foundation, you can chop on it and do anything. It's more flexible. However, you can still be flexible with the paper piecing method. You just move your fabric and stitch it overlapping the fabric I'm going to cut off in this picture with the ruler.

In this picture I liked the stripe, but felt it was too wide. I cut it strait, but what would happen if you cut it a bit skewed? Could be neat?! I don't know. With sewing and quilting sometimes you just have to throw out the instructions. Throw out the pattern. Just go for it and see what happens. Some of my best quilts have been born this way. I have this quilt idea....a teal and orange quilt...but I keep over thinking it. I can't even cut into the fabric yet because I don't have a "plan". I am realizing that I love the fabric so much that I am over thinking it and stressing out way too much about it because I want it to be perfect. There is a time and place for perfect. I should work on perfecting my machine binding skill. But sometimes perfection stifles creativity. And when that happens....you need to work on a project that you can really let go on. Or learn how to be more flexible and creative! he he he. I will re-visit my teals and oranges and try what I preach. Back to the quilt block...

Alright. See how the block is taking on that 90 degree angle with the red and the green strips? I'm not liking it. Yep....time to get out the ruler and blade.

Aaahh, much better. Now I keep stitching on strips around and around.

Whenever I am working on a project, I like to lay out my fabrics and visually see what I have throughout the entire process. Even with quilts, I lay out each block on the floor before I sew them together. Quilts can look nice or they can look GREAT. It's all about color and placement. I am often know to get out the high stepladder, climb up over looking my quilt, and snap a picture. That gives me a wonderful birds-eye view of how my quilt is looking before I stitch the blocks together.

The Quilting Bee Block {part 1}

OKC Modern Quilt Guild Quilting Bee Month of June

This tutorial is for the 9 lovely ladies in our quilting bee.

This is my month so I chose to have some blocks that kind of look like these below.

But....I want you to "bee" creative, have fun, get modern on me! :)

I made 2 different "Verna Spice" 17" blocks.

The one on the left was six sided and pieced more strait and orderly. The one on the right was 5 sided and pieced more wonky, I reshaped and cut the block as I worked on it. The left one was just paper pieced strait on the muslin, the right one was pieced "floating" (not on a foundation) until I got to the corners. When I got to the corners, I paper pieced it so that I didn't waste fabric!
Let's start with the left block step by step:

Here is my 6 sided shape I made from one of the 3.5" fabric squares (2 are included). Pick a side to start with and a fabric to sew on next. Cut the fabric strip with your scissors just a bit longer than the side you want to sew it to.

Now fold over the strip you cut so that "right sides" are together and stitch a 1/4 inch seam with your 1/4 seam foot.

Press the seam and strip with your iron so you have this to the left. Now move on with the next side and pick out another strip of fabric. See how I cut the reddish strip a bit longer than that side.

Pin the fabric (right sides together) and sew a 1/4 seam. remember the line you follow with your fabric is the next side of the shape (center fabric). However....if you are making a more wonky block, this is where you can sew the strip on a little crooked to get a crazy pieced effect. Just make sure you cover the seam with fabric and don't leave holes in the design as you go around stitching your strips on.

Press open with your iron. Viola!

Here is my 3rd strip.

Here is my 4th strip after I stitched it on. See how the "right sides" or nice sides are together. Now I will flip it over and press.

Press with iron and get ready for the next strip.

I have finished one time around the shape now with 7 strips. Just keep going around stitching the strips on with the same method. You can even piece the strips you sew on with a few fabrics if you wanted to. Get creative! Sew strait lines! Or overlap and sew wonky lines! Whatever! Have fun with the 2 blocks you make.

In this picture I have finished one corner and cut it flush with the muslin. I will move on to the next corner.

Here is my reddish strip cut to a good length. I like the paper piecing method with the muslin so I can see where I am on completing the block. If you just make a big block and go back with an acrylic square and cut it to the right size, I found that I waste the corner fabric when I chop it off. Paper piecing allows you to see your shape and cut your strips just the right length.

Reddish strip has been pressed and now you are ready for the last corner strip of fabric. After you sew it on and press it, flip over your block as shown below and cut off the excess fabric on the corners.

Keep sewing until all the muslin is covered. Working around the center shape till you reach the corners.

Finished! Ta Da!

I will post a part 2 of this tutorial showing how to piece this block a little more wonky and a little more impromptu. Stay tuned in say 2 months from now for a look at this quilting bee quilt finished. I can not wait to see what the girls sew up!!! =D

Doll Quilt

I like to name my quilts and bags. One reason is to keep them all labeled, and the other reason is because they become my "baby" after spending so much time, energy, and love on a sewing project. Since this is a doll quilt, I found it only appropriate to have my daughter name it after on of her dolls. Today I asked her what her dolls name was. She said, "doll". Um, okay. I then asked her to name the doll quilt anything she wanted to name it. She said, "Quilt, just quilt.". Okay. So, here you have it, introducing the "Doll Quilt".

I am in the process of making a twin size quilt like the doll quilt below. Hopefully it will be finished in a day or two! Check back for pictures! As always, anything you see here can be made into a custom order with your own color and fabric choices. Email me to start the process of making your own special something!

Laminate stripe bib

Bibs are $30 and come in 6 fabric choices.
Here is the big laminate bib/painting bib pictured on a 4 year old.
This bib should fit a 3 to 6 year old. It has 3 front pockets and a tie closure.
It can be machine washed on cold and hung to dry. I personally would wipe it clean as much is possible and only wash it when the binding gets yucky.
And, yes, I made a doll bib for ducky.
I can make smaller bibs for babies and toddlers too.

Rainy Days and Mondays

Rainy Days and Mondays, no wait...it's a rainy Monday!

I was going to go outside and take pictures of a new bag I made over the weekend.

But...when I awoke, It was pouring rain. Which most people would groan at, but I LOVE the rain and thunderstorms! So, I am very peaceful this morn watching and smelling the rain outside my window. But, that means no outside pics of my new bag. Oh well. How about I post pictures anyway!!!! This bag was inspired by....RAIN! When I made the bag this weekend it was sunny and clear. It is also inspired by a few of my favorite verses:

"As the heavens are higher than the earth,

I will say one of them involves turquoise and gray.

Which I think is so beautiful.

I love thunderstorms and the rain.

I love Oklahoma weather.

Maybe that's why that color combination makes me smile.

Josie Brooklyn

This is a quilt I made for sweet baby Josie Brooklyn Duggar. How many names can you count?

I haven't washed it yet, so in the pictures the cotton top is a bit wavy from the quilting, but it will shrink back up in the wash and look SO nice.

I added the verse Romans 15:13 for baby Josie and her mommy and daddy.

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit"

We love you all and pray for your family and sweet baby Josie.

See Josie's name? And "The Duggars". This little quilt turned out SO cute. Can't wait for them to open it! The quilt is 27"x31". Just perfect for a little baby. I did everything you see on the quilt. I free motion quilted the little flowers and the meandering stitch around the circles in the border. I really liked the way the border turned out. I am SO happy with the way this quilt looks. Hope they love it like I do! The back of the quilt and binding is soft and cuddly white stripe minky.

Baby Boy Zoo Quilt

THIS is one of my favorites!!!
SO modern and cute!

This is a wonderful boy quilt. Great thickness to put on the floor as a play blanket to have a baby play on. The front is hand cut and pieced by me in non-traditional blocks with white borders and binding. The main colors are blue, brown, and sage/pistachio green. I love love love the fabrics. The fabrics are from Michael Miller and Robert Kaufman. The feature fabric is an animal print called "zoology" by Michael Miller. The back of the quilt is soft blue flannel. I personally free motion quilted this with 3 different patterns. I used hi-loft batting. This quilt measures 48"x48" square.

***I can make matching bibs and burp cloths if the buyer wants to make this a baby gift set***

New bigger bib for painting or dinner!

I made a newer version of my favorite oil cloth bib. This one I made bigger to fit a 3-5 year old. It's made out of a laminate or oil cloth. Cleans easy, water proof, and you can throw it in the washer. Great size for art time. If you want to order one, specify binding color. I can sew on green (pictured) red, red damask, blue, or pink. Or any other fabric you like.

zipper pouches and purses

Zipper pouches: Pick 2 fabrics for the outside and inside of pouch and your zipper color (white, black, and a few others). I can also make any size pouch you need for that special job. Great for fitting inside your purse or backpack, or stand alone for a quick trip to the store. These pouches have a medium stiff interfacing inside to keep their shape. Below pouches are 5"x9".

Fashion Clutch Purse: Pick any number of fabrics or a theme or a color pallet. Purse measures 11"x7" for a large to 5"x3" for a small, and anywhere in between!!! Velcro closure with modern button. This is a Blanket I made for my little girl. My mom came over and helped! We pieced and quilted the top, I added a B monogram in the corner with a ribbon loop to hang the blanket when not in use. The back is 4 different colors of super soft minky dot material. Love this blanket!!! Call or email your ideas and I can make your little one a custom blanket too. Great to take on car trips or to school or day care for nap time.
